Symbolic play among children with autism spectrum disorder: a scoping review
2021
Symbolic play is considered an early indicator in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its assessment. The objective of this study was to analyze the difficulties in symbolic play experienced by children with ASD and to determine the existence of differences in symbolic play among children with ASD, children with other neurodevelopmental disorders and children with typical development. A scoping review was carried out in the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, ERIC, and PsycInfo databases, following the extension for scoping reviews of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The number of papers included in the review was 22. The r…
Lead optimization through VLAK protocol: New annelated pyrrolo-pyrimidine derivatives as antitumor agents
2012
Abstract The chemometric protocol VLAK was applied to predict improvement of the biological activity of pyrrolo-pyrimidine derivatives as anticancer agents, by using the NCI ACAM Database as depository of antitumor drugs with a known mechanism of action. Among the selected compounds two of these showed a good increase in the antitumor activity. These new pyrrolo-pyrimidine compounds were demonstrated effective against the full panels of NCI DTP tumour human cell lines. The derivative 8-[3-(piperidino)propyl]-4,10-dimethyl-9-phenyl-6-(methylsulfanyl)-3,4-dihydropyrimido[1,2-c]pyrrolo[3,2-e]pyrimidin-2(8H)-one reveled efficacious against the leukemia subpanel, in particular the RPMI cell line…
Towards Efficient Teacher Assisted Assignment Marking Using Ranking Metrics
2017
This paper describes a tool with supporting methodology for efficient teacher assisted marking of open assignments based on student answer ranking metrics. It includes a methodology for how to design tasks for markability. This improves marking efficienty and reduces cognitive strain for the teacher during marking, and also allows for easily giving feedback to students on common pitfalls and misconceptions to improve both the learning outcome for the students as well as the teacher’s productivity by reducing the time needed for marking open assignments. An advantage with the method is that it is language agnostic as well as generally being agnostic to the discipline of the course being asse…
Bacillus thuringiensis Toxins: Functional Characterization and Mechanism of Action
2020
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-based products are the most successful microbial insecticides to date. This entomopathogenic bacterium produces different kinds of proteins whose specific toxicity has been shown against a wide range of insect orders, nematodes, mites, protozoa, and human cancer cells. Some of these proteins are accumulated in parasporal crystals during the sporulation phase (Cry and Cyt proteins), whereas other proteins are secreted in the vegetative phase of growth (Vip and Sip toxins). Currently, insecticidal proteins belonging to different groups (Cry and Vip3 proteins) are widely used to control insect pests and vectors both in formulated sprays and in transgenic crops (the …

A Combination of Celecoxib and Glucosamine Sulfate Has Anti-Inflammatory and Chondroprotective Effects: Results from an In Vitro Study on Human Osteo…
2021
This study investigated the possible anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects of a combination of celecoxib and prescription-grade glucosamine sulfate (GS) in human osteoarthritic (OA) chondrocytes and their possible mechanism of action. Chondrocytes were treated with celecoxib (1.85 µM) and GS (9 µM), alone or in combination with IL-1β (10 ng/mL) and a specific nuclear factor (NF)-κB inhibitor (BAY-11-7082, 1 µM). Gene expression and release of some pro-inflammatory mediators, metalloproteinases (MMPs), and type II collagen (Col2a1) were evaluated by qRT-PCR and ELISA

Tourism development from disaster capitalism.
2021
This research note focuses on the impact of tourism development from disaster capitalism as expressed by post-disaster land grabs and forced population displacement. Case studies highlighted are India, Thailand and Sri Lanka following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami; Honduras after Hurricane Mitch in 1998; and Barbuda following Hurricane Irma in 2017, demonstrating how disaster capitalism continues to be in play. The examples draw on disaster research to show how tourism development from disaster capitalism leads to more disasters. Long-standing disaster research can assist tourism researchers in identifying how to counter harmful post-disaster tourism development.
A Counter-Reformation Reaction to Slovenian and Croatian Protestantism: The Symbol of St. Athanasius in a Creed of 1624
2018
During the second half of the 16th century, Istria was influenced by the Lutheran ideas disseminated by the Slovene Primoz Trubar. According to recent researches, between 1561 and 1565, the followers of Trubar Stjepan Konzul and Anton Dalmatin, with the financial support of Baron Hans Ungnad von Sonneg, translated and transliterated fourteen books into Croatian with Glagolitic script, eight or nine into Cyrillic, six into Croatian with Latin script, four into Slovenian, six into Italian and one into German. Given that their “Slovenian, Croatian and Cyrillic Printing House” (Windische, Crabatische und Cirulitsche Thrukeray) of Urach, a city nearby Tubingen, was responsible for printing more …
